US pullout from Iraq?

US pullout from Iraq?
US declared war on Saddam Hussain ruled Iraq in 2003. The war led to overthrow of Bath party’s autocratic hold on Iraq and started an era of violence and bloodshed that still refuses to die down. The war on Iraq started with US and UK alleging that Saddam Hussain’s Iraq has weapons of mass destruction in its possession and is a safe haven for Al Qaeda. Although, Iraq vehemently denied this charge, these two countries still went ahead and declared a war on the country. Finally, after George Bush era ended and Obama became President of US, the war on Iraq ended and US troops pulled out of Iraq in 2011. But still Iraq is in doldrums, the violence, poverty and extremism have taken hold of this country and mayhem rules this desert land.

Reasons favoring US pullout
  • Obama as President – Obama became President of US in 2008 riding on the poll plank of troop withdrawal from Iraq. Most Americans see this war as a futile exercise that has cost lives of several US army personnel and has plunged their country in the recession. The big casualty count and huge capital required to fund this war has made this war highly unpopular and has made Geroge W. Bush a butt of all jokes. At one point Blair was called Bush’s poodle for toeing his line. As if that was not enough, even the weapon of mass destruction theory floated by Blair and Bush bit the dust, when not even a speck of them could be found anywhere in Iraq. Hence, a pullout was but only imminent.
  • Casualty – Many US troops lost life in this war. This was the second most terrible war after US war on Vietnam; parallels were drawn with world wars where US casualty count was much lower. The high mortality rate forced US to withdraw its troops from Iraq.
  • World ire – Though US and UK flouted UN in declaring war; they soon had to face criticism from all quarters as they have gone against world opinion. While it led to extremism and made Islamic countries skeptical of this war, it also made George W. Bush a pariah in politics. What was more, the said WMD and safe haven for Al-Qaeda was virtually non-existent in the Saddam’s Iraq! The war was not for WMDs but was for liquid gold! This revelation further isolated US operation in Iraq.
Reasons against US pullout
  • Rise of terrorism in Iraq - Saddam’s Iraq was free from Islamic terrorism and no one can deny that. But since the day he was hanged, bomb-blasts and sectarian clashes have become the order of the day. Not a single day is passed when Iraqis do not face violence in its ugliest raw form. While earlier Iraq was free from Al Qaeda and its radical offshoots, now extremism and sectarian clashes are the order of the day.
  • Threat to neighbors - A volatile and radical Iraq is not just a cause of concern for its populace but also to the countries with which it shares its borders with. Due to porous border extremism slip in and out of the country and take shelter in other neighboring states. This has led to rise in violent clashes in other countries as well.
