Mambo

Mambo
Mambo is a Latin dance of Cuba. Mambo music was invented during the 1930s in Havana by Cachao and made popular by Perez Prado and Benny Mor?. In the late 1940s, Perez Prado came up with the dance for the mambo music and became the first person to market his music as "mambo". After Havana, Prado moved his music to Mexico, where his music and the dance were adopted. The original mambo dance was characterized by freedom and complicated foot-steps. Some Mexican entertainers became well known dancers like Tongolele, Tin Tan and Lilia Prado. Most of these accompanied Prado in live presentations or were seen in Mexican films. The Cuban dance wasn't accepted by many professional dance teachers. Cuban dancers would describe mambo as "feeling the music" in which sound and movement were merged through the body. Professional dance teachers in the US saw this approach to dancing as "extreme," "undisciplined," and thus, deemed it necessary to standardize the dance to present it as a sell-able commodity for the social or ballroom market. This style is not danced to Mambo music, for which it is poorly suited, but instead to Salsa music.

Advantages of Mambo
  • Freedom of movement – Original Cuban dancers describe Mambo as "feeling the music" in which sound and movement were merged through the body. Mambo probably has its roots in tribal ethnicities of Cuba in which they developed Mambo dancing as part of their cultural thanksgiving celebration. The dance was then discovered by Perez Prado which he “invented” as Mambo during the 1930’s.
  • No precise dance steps – Everyone (except the elderly) can literally dance Mambo because it does not have really precise steps. Elderly people can dance mambo provided they do not overdo their dance moves. Anybody with or without dance experience can dance mambo and look almost as gracefully as those individuals dancing other dances.
  • Slower dance – Because of Mambo’s slower beat (compared to cha-cha), it is great for middle-aged individuals who are not so active, yet still able to do significant dance moves. Middle-aged people usually dance Mambo for recreational purposes. Seldom do they dance for competitive purposes.
Disadvantages of Mambo
  • Not standardized - Professional dance teachers in the US saw dancing Mambo as "extreme," and "undisciplined," thus they developed their own version (Salsa On 2) so that the new dance would be profitable in the Ballroom industry. This resulted in the overshadowing of the original Mambo dance which has a significant impact on Cuban culture.
  • “Marketed” as Salsa on 2 – Mambo was not standardized during its early times, that is why Eddie Torres developed a more standardized version of Mambo which he called Salsa On 2. The main disadvantage for this is that the cultural importance of Mambo (for Cubans) is now more or less forgotten just for a very simple reason that the dance was not standardized and profitable for the Ballroom industry.
  • Fewer calories burned – because of the pace of the dance, Mambo only burns less calories compared to cha-cha. The dance is therefore not very suitable for individuals who wish to trim down their excessive body fats.

What makes Mambo a really good dance compared to others
Mambo is generally slower than cha-cha. The dance is characterized with freedom of movement and it has no definite dance steps. Mambo has its origin back in Cuba where it was famous during the 1930’s. Freedom of movement makes the dance one of the base of today’s modern disco-electro dances. It is sometimes the type of dance moves which are danced by local people in clubs nowadays. Mambo has intricate feet movement with particularly free hands. The hands can be as free as the dancer wishes them to be. Sadly, mambo nowadays is rare. It is commonly confused with Salsa (mambo is also called Salsa On 2). The reason for this was that Mambo was not standardized during its early times, so it was more or less renamed to Salsa in order for the dance to be profitable to professional dance instructors especially in the US. Mambo is definitely one of the dances with the freest movements.
